Starfleet has always been at the forefront of defense for its fleet ships and the need for a lighter vessel to these ends has been a goal of designers throughout the federation. A lighter more maneuverable vessel as both a scout and a fleet defense ship was a goal that Starfleet pursued relentlessly and to this end the corvette was created.
With the success of both the Avimimus and Maxwell class of corvette. Starfleet wanted a ship that had slightly less mass and a bit more speed. Thus the Davenport Class was born.
By removing the torpedo bay the ships mass was reduced by several thousand metric tons without a loss of tactical abilities. Though the lack of torpedoes took away some of the ships offensive abilities. With the multidirectional phaser canons combined with maneuverability the ship still maintains a lethal combination of firepower and tactical capability.
Fleet tactical command has found that while working in groups of three or more, the Davenport class has been able to go head to head with even the larger Excelsior and Ingram class heavy cruisers and inflict simulated damage on a larger scale then predicted.
The Davenport has as of yet been involved in many engagements with Klingon forces, but it is believed that the Ships will have no problem in a direct conflict.
