Starfleet Command had a sizable fleet of escort sized science vessels planned before the start of the Dominion War. Once open war started, Starfleet Command lost 98 starships within months. In an effort to field as many warships in a short time, Starfleet Command order that 13 Nova Class spaceframes were to be haulted mid construction and converted into a new class of starship. The Long Island Sub-Class Escort Carrier. These ships were both quicker and cheaper to build than larger fleet carriers and were built to serve as a stop-gap measure when fleet carriers were too few. However, they were underpower for main fleet operations and would typically be assigned to convoy operations, Convoy operations often seen in the Dominion war's planet hopping campaign. The Long Island escort carriers excelled at convoy operations and would work in two Starship teams.
One encounter would give the escort carriers their short lived fame. The USS Core NCC 78013 and the USS Bogue NCC 78009 encountered a fleet of 6 Jem'hadar Attack Starships. The Core and Bogue launched their Starfighters and the Core took up guard while the Bogue staied with the Convoy. The Core took command of both fighter wings and engaged, disabling one attack starship almost immediately. The Bogue and the rest of the Convoy made it out of the combat zone with little damage. The USS Core was belived to be destoryed in action. Six months after the battle the thought to be destoryed USS Core limped into Deep Space Nines control Zone. The Core had taken massive damage and loss of life, but the crews fight to make it home became one of the ledgends of the Dominion War. While some of these ships were kept for a time in reserve after the war, only 1 survives today as a musame ship, as the rest have all since been destoryed, or scrapped.
