As yellow alert klaxons reverberate all around her, Cadet Thira Sidhu requests a status update from Ops before an explosion sends her to the floor. On duty in the Inventory 2 section of Starbase 28, the young Cadet struggles back to her feet, yet remains dazed by the chaos surrounding her. With the Starbase apparently under attack by the Tholians, two security guards and one hooded prisoner burst into the Cadet’s section. Sidhu is informed that, due to damage on the base and the inaccessibility of the brig, the prisoner is now her responsibility. Asking the security guards what happened, the ominous response is ‘Mutiny.’ The identity of the prisoner is revealed as his electronic hood is removed. It’s none other than Captain Pike himself. With a phaser now in hand, the Cadet acknowledges her duty before the security guards exit the room.
Now that he is alone with Sidhu, Captain Pike orders the Cadet to release him and to give him access to the communications terminal. Clearly at odds with the responsibility placed on her, Pike begins to apply various forms of pressure on the young Cadet. From playing on his status as one of Starfleet’s most decorated captains, to informing her that her husband’s ship – one that he attempted to save that led to his arrest - is in danger, Pike peppers his jailer with argument after argument about why he should be freed.![]()

As Sidhu holds firm to her position of responsibility over her prisoner, Pike continues to apply pressure, suggesting that he could make or break her Starfleet career, before it’s even begun. Pressure turns to reasoning as Pike suggests that he was unfairly removed from his post, and that she has the power to right a wrong. Despite all the pressures and demands Pike places on Sidhu, she counters each one of his appeals and valiantly stands her ground as she cites Starfleet regulations.
With tensions rising, and Captain Pike heading towards the door, Sidhu levels a phaser at the captain, ordering him to stop. At that moment, with a broad smile crossing over his face, Pike reveals that this was all a test. Still somewhat confused at the events that just took place, Pike informs her that her application to serve aboard the Enterprise in the Engineering department, plus her history with the Tholians is what led to the somewhat unorthodox test.
The two beam aboard the Enterprise where Spock and Lieutenant Commander Una welcome her aboard. Pike then escorts that wide-eyed Cadet to the Engineering department, where her Starfleet career will now truly begin.
