Synopsis
The U.S.S. Enterprise is tasked with a delicate covert operation: retrieving a broken Federation surveillance probe that has drifted across the border into Klingon territory. To avoid sparking a new conflict in the ongoing cold war, Commander Una Chin-Riley leads her first away mission as a newly promoted Commander, accompanied by Dr. M'Benga and Ensign Uhura. They travel by shuttle to the Mat'aar system, which is dominated by a star that emits an infrared blackbody spectrum. This unique radiation completely filters out the color spectrum, rendering everything, including the crew's vision, in stark black and white. While the team successfully recovers the probe, the sudden arrival of a Klingon D7 battle cruiser forces them to detour and hide on the nearby Klingon-occupied planet of Mat'aar XII, a stormy, art-deco world.
Ordered by Captain Pike to blend in with the local population, the away team adopts native disguises to evade the occupying Klingon forces. However, hiding in plain sight becomes incredibly complicated when it is discovered that Una is a perfect doppelganger for a local woman named Navette. Navette is simultaneously a trusted top lieutenant to the planet's Klingon overlord and a secret double agent leading the underground resistance to help Mat'aaran families escape the occupation. Forced to assume Navette's identity to protect her team, Una must bluff her way through encounters with the local authorities, passing off M'Benga and Uhura as her newest resistance recruits.
The occupying Klingon forces on Mat'aar XII are led by a younger Commander Kor, a brutal yet sophisticated member of the Imperial family with ambitions of completely subjugating the planet's populace. The stakes are raised when Uhura is captured and tortured by Kor for information. Drawing heavily on his dark past and the trauma of the Klingon War, M'Benga struggles with his own violent impulses to assassinate the Klingon occupiers. Despite his deeply ingrained hatred, M'Benga manages to restrain himself, instead offering invaluable counsel to Una on the nuances of deep-cover deception and helping her navigate the deadly political landscape of the occupation until they can secure fake identification for Uhura.![]()

Una's masquerade as Navette reaches a critical point when she is forced to interrogate a captured Mat'aaran resistance fighter accused of treason. Before dying from a sudden poisoning, the resistance fighter secretly passes Una a vital transmission frequency, trusting her to execute the rebellion's next move. Utilizing this information, Una masterfully outsmarts Kor, utilizing a local sympathizer to launch the resistance's master plan. The coordinated strike frees the captive citizens and deals a significant blow to the Klingon Empire's grip on the planet, creating enough chaos for the away team to finally escape back to the Enterprise.
Meanwhile, aboard the Enterprise, Lieutenant La'an Noonien-Singh launches a tense investigation into the retrieved Federation probe. Noticing a misaligned data chip, an increasingly paranoid La'an becomes convinced that the probe's code was sabotaged by an unknown party. Dismissing Spock's logical reassurances, she obsessively follows a trail of red herrings to uncover a potential mole. Her investigation ultimately reveals that the tampering was not an act of espionage, but rather a cover-up by Nurse Chapel. Chapel had altered the logs to protect a Federation medical ship that had illegally crossed the demarcation line to answer a distress call.
Faced with this revelation, La'an makes a difficult choice. Rather than acting as a strict enforcer of protocol, she chooses to protect a friend, deciding not to report Chapel's well-intentioned infractions. Back on the bridge, the successful return of the away team caps off a harrowing covert mission. The stark, colorless environment of Mat'aar XII ultimately mirrors the complex morality the crew had to navigate, leaving them to grapple with the heavy burdens of leadership and the reality that very few choices in the galaxy are ever truly black and white.
