Synopsis
Lieutenant Nyota Uhura returned from a conference feeling energized and quickly brushed off an awkward attempt by Scotty to ask her out. She headed straight to the bridge of the USS Enterprise, currently under the command of Captain Christopher Pike. The crew was on a mission to explore a rare white hole, testing a theory that it served as the opposite end of a black hole. Pilot Erica Ortegas flew the ship a bit too close to the anomaly, causing explosive chaos as strange energy entities emerged to grasp the vessel while emitting musical notes. The impact sent Uhura crashing to the deck, where she briefly phased in and out of reality.
Back at her station, Uhura heard Scotty screaming over the communications channel as if he were suffering a deadly accident. When she checked on him, however, he was perfectly fine and busy with routine engineering duties. Sent to sickbay to rest after getting her bell rung, Uhura tried to find a signal emanating from inside the white hole. She confided in security officer La'An Noonien-Singh, who reminded her of Starfleet protocols regarding temporal anomalies. Following La'An's discreet advice, Uhura located an anomalous Starfleet communication and made contact with a future version of herself. The two women quickly realized they needed to work together to save Scotty from a tragic death.
Exactly one year in the future, a slightly older Uhura was serving aboard the Enterprise, which was now commanded by Captain James T. Kirk. This future version of Uhura was more relaxed, sported a new hairstyle, and had embraced a romantic relationship with Scotty. Kirk's crew was exploring a black hole, the presumed opposite side of the anomaly encountered in the past. Future Uhura, Scotty, and a visiting Ortegas took a shuttle to investigate the phenomenon. The mission went wrong almost immediately, and Uhura was beamed back to the Enterprise just as the shuttle exploded.![]()

When future Uhura frantically asked Kirk and Spock about the fate of Scotty and Ortegas, the officers were completely confused. They insisted that Ortegas was happily working as a flight instructor on Bindar-12 and that Scotty had tragically died a year earlier. Realizing that something had drastically altered her timeline, future Uhura received a signal from her past self. The two Uhuras hatched a plan, taking advantage of the one year gap to get scientific and technological assistance from their respective versions of Spock and the still living Scotty.
Future Uhura managed to procure a dilithium diamond quantum device to send into the black hole. In the past, present Uhura prepared to send an energy pulse into the white hole to properly restore the timeline. Instead, a new pulse emerged from both sides of the anomaly, causing chaos on both ships and physically swapping the two Uhuras across time and space. Both women ended up in sickbay on each other's vessels. Present Uhura struggled to bluff her way past a future Nurse Chapel, who now wore a beehive hairdo, while future Uhura faced a suspicious Captain Pike.
Pike and Kirk, both experienced with temporal phenomena, quickly deduced the truth and agreed to help save Scotty. Present Uhura translated the mysterious musical notes along with a clue involving a mural of a dead language she had left for herself. She realized the space entities called themselves midwives and were broadcasting a warning for the ships to stay clear because a baby was breaching. Conceived in the future and arriving in the past, this unique cosmic entity could only be safely delivered with the help of the two Uhuras.
The birthing plan required both women to go out onto the outer hulls of their respective starships to deploy special drones. Present Uhura took a literal leap of faith, launching herself directly into the anomaly just as she witnessed the catastrophic moment of Scotty's death in her own time. Inside the anomaly, the two Uhuras met face to face and successfully helped deliver the space baby. They found themselves on a strange version of the bridge where the midwives explained that the entire event was a temporal misunderstanding. Because the Uhuras were an essential surprise to bring this new life into the galaxy, the midwives fixed the timelines, saved Scotty, and allowed only the two women to remember the experience.
Before parting ways, future Uhura shared a poignant moment with her younger self, reminding her to never stop growing. The women returned to their respective ships with a renewed sense of vitality and purpose. Future Uhura confidently took a seat at Captain Kirk's poker game, while present Uhura gladly joined Captain Pike for a dinner party. Both women were left feeling content, knowing they were exactly where they wanted to be alongside their Starfleet family.
