Synopsis
The day begins quietly for the cadets, with Caleb and Tarima sharing a rare moment of peace in a Betazoid garden. Tarima invites Caleb into her private mental refuge, a place she uses to shield herself from the emotional noise of others. When their bond deepens, Caleb’s buried memories surface - his unresolved grief over his mother and the anger he has tried to keep locked away. The intimacy fractures their calm, leaving both unsettled just as duty calls them back to Starfleet.
Their next assignment is meant to be a controlled joint exercise between Starfleet Academy and the War College: an exploration and recovery mission aboard the long-abandoned USS Miyazaki. The ship once housed an experimental drive that collapsed catastrophically, and its remains now drift among other wrecks. What begins as a structured training scenario quickly feels uncomfortably real when strange lifeforms known as the Furies emerge from the surrounding debris and swarm the vessel, overwhelming the cadets and cutting them off from immediate rescue.
On the bridge of the Athena, Chancellor Nahla Ake watches the situation deteriorate and realizes conventional tactics will not save the trapped team. With no better option, she reaches out to Nus Braka, a pirate and former adversary with knowledge of the region and its dangers. Their conversation is sharp and layered with old resentment, but Braka offers guidance that seems to provide the only path forward. Nahla accepts his help despite her distrust, knowing the cadets’ lives depend on it.![]()

Inside the Miyazaki, the cadets struggle to adapt as the Furies close in. Fear replaces confidence, and every decision carries real consequences. B’avi, the Vulcan cadet from the War College, places himself between the attackers and his fellow cadets, trying to prevent further harm rather than secure a way out. His choice is driven by logic and duty, but its result is tragic. The others are forced to watch helplessly as he is lost, a moment that leaves them shaken and silent.
As the situation grows more desperate, Tarima removes the mental restraints she has always relied upon to limit her empathic abilities. Through her bond with Caleb, she pushes him to confront both the ship’s failing systems and his own emotional barriers. Together, they manage to disrupt the Furies’ attack and open a narrow path for rescue. The effort leaves Tarima unconscious, her strength spent, as transporters finally pull the remaining cadets back to safety.
The aftermath is quiet and heavy. A funeral is held for B’avi beneath the stars, and the surviving cadets face the reality that training has crossed into tragedy. Nahla addresses them with honesty rather than reassurance, acknowledging that no simulation can prepare them for the weight of such loss. Their future in Starfleet now carries a deeper meaning, shaped by what they have endured together.
Only later does the full truth surface. The mission was never simply an accident of circumstance. Braka had orchestrated events from the beginning, using the cadets as leverage to draw Nahla into his web and expose Starfleet’s vulnerabilities. His assistance was not an act of goodwill but part of a larger design, turning the crisis into a calculated trap. As the Athena departs the wreckage, the cadets carry more than grief - they carry the knowledge that they have been tested not only by the unknown, but by manipulation from within their own orbit of trust.
