Captain Pike of the U.S.S. Enterprise beams aboard the Discovery with two of his officers. On Starfleet's orders, Captain Pike takes command of Discovery in the wake of a new threat to the Federation. Prior to rendezvousing with the Discovery, the Enterprise had been investigating seven red bursts of light and energy that appeared across 30,000 light-years of space; of which all but one had disappeared. As the Enterprise’s systems were damaged by the incoming signals of the red bursts, Pike orders the Discovery to proceed to the location of the last signal.

Upon arriving at the location of the last red burst signal, which turns out to be an asteroid, the Discovery is surrounded by a debris field and heavy gravitational distortions which begin to impact many of the ship’s systems, including the transporters. Despite arriving at the verified location of the last signal, there is no sign of the red burst. The interaction of the ship with the asteroid and the debris field causes the Discovery’s course to alter, sending it on a collision course with a nearby pulsar.
However before the ship can retreat to a safe area, the Discovery’s sensors locate a crashed Starfleet ship on the surface of the asteroid. With the possibility of survivors on the ship, and the lack of transporters to bring them aboard, Pike asks his bridge officers for rescue options. Burnham comes up with a plan to utilize landing pods to navigate through the debris field via a high-speed approach to the asteroid. Pike, Burham, and Lt. Connolly, the science officer of the Enterprise, make the descent to the asteroid, however Connolly perishes after his pod collides with some of the debris. Pike’s pod begins to malfunction, forcing the Captain to eject while Burnham utilizes her thrusters to secure Pike, and land them both safely on the asteroid.
Within the crashed ship, the U.S.S Hiawatha, Pike and Burham find Commander Denise "Jett" Reno, an engineer who has managed to keep some seriously injured crew members alive utilizing her engineering prowess. The landing party sets up transporter enhancers to beam the survivors to the Discovery, however Burnham doesn't make it in time. As she begins to fall unconscious, Burham she sees a red winged figure approaching her. Before she can focus on the figure, she is rescued by Captain Pike as both return to the Discovery.
Back aboard the Discovery, Stamets and Saru arrange to bring aboard a piece of the mysterious debris field; capturing and confining it in the ship’s shuttlebay. While Pike's mission is over, the Enterprise is still in need of extensive repairs, allowing the Captain to remain on board the Discovery. Later, Pike reveals to Burnham that her foster brother, Spock, had recently taken leave. In Spock's quarters on the Enterprise, she discovers that his sudden disappearance is actually related to the strange red bursts of light.
