RUSH, the legendary rock n' roll hall of fame power trio, is one of the greatest rock bands of all-time, with more than 40 million records sold worldwide. Along with Ringo Starr, Dave Grohl, Buddy Rich and Keith Moon, Neil Peart is one of the most influential drummers that ever sat behind the kit.
We have chosen some of our favorite quotes and created elegant single-panel cartoons as a love letter to Neil Peart's written word.
The first and only authorized Neil Peart quotes collection.
INTRODUCTION
There's a simple answer to explain why we did this book: Neil Peart's work went beyond changing the world of drums. I wanted to write an illustrated love letter to his written word. Of course, it includes historical quotes from his time with RUSH, as well as anecdotes and humorous moments from his life. But I feel this book is more about the man than the drummer.
Like many of you reading these pages, Neil was a role model of mine. His philosophy to strive to achieve the most from his potential, in whatever he did in life, and to fight for his dreams with integrity, is one that everyone can aspire to, and it has had a profound impact in my life.
We worked on this book for about three years, without knowledge of his illness. I don't think we would have been able to create this book had we known about it, truthfully. There's so much joy on the pages. The style and brushstrokes in every illustration reflect innocence and joy (thank you, Lindsay). I believe that's how he wanted this to be.
When we got a message from management with a quote from Neil, giving us his two thumbs up to do this book after he saw the pages, saying that the cartoons made him laugh and brought lots of happy memories, we were all thrilled and incredibly inspired! Happiness was in the air at Fantoons Animation Studios. Now that we know what he was going through, it means so much more to all of us. Funny how perspective means everything.
I hope these pages make you laugh, inspire you, or give you snippets of Neil that you did not notice before. Maybe it will encourage you to pick up his books, read his RUSH lyrics, or listen to their music. Our purpose is to celebrate him with every one of these pages. Thank you for sharing this ride with us.
