A Farewell to Kings The Graphic Novel by David Calcano, Juan Riera, Ittai Manero, and Lindsay Lee September 2019 |
Officially licensed RUSH graphic novel chronicling the making of Rush’s classic album “A Farewell to Kings.”
RUSH, the well-known Canadian power trio, is one of the most influential rock bands of all-time, with more than 40 million records sold worldwide. This epic, fully authorized graphic novel chronicles the birth of Rush’s classic album “A Farewell to Kings”. Relive the trials and triumphs alongside Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee, and Neil Peart as they create the masterpiece of progressive rock that gave birth to “Closer to the Heart” & the majestic “Xanadu”. The book features artwork and storytelling from Fantoons, with new input from Alex Lifeson (Rush guitar player) and Terry Brown (the producer of the album).
The journey with Rush was the sweetest. It began in 1973 when Vic Wilson, who at that time was managing the band with Ray Danniels, called me up and asked me if I could help the boys finish their first album -- it needed a few tunes recorded and all of it mixed. That took a total of three days, and it was three days that would help shape the future for both rush and myself. The recording was a thrill, Ged's voice was like nothing I had heard before in my eight years of recording, and Alex doubled his guitar parts with such fluid accuracy it formed one huge guitar sound, all very exciting.
It would be a year later that I'd get introduced to Mr. Peart, who not only came with killer chops on the kit, but also a love for the written word, and it was this love that fueled a powerful trajectory for the next three albums, bringing about our pilgrimage to Wales to record A Farewell to Kings.
The idea of doing a graphic novel about one of the greatest rock records ever is quite overwhelming. As of now, no one that we know of has attempted to tell the story of the making of an album as a graphic novel, and being the first is both scary and exciting.
We did our absolute best to create a story that works, with an entertaining pace to make it a great reading experience, with material for both hardcore and new fans. The narrative is inspired by true events, and we worked extremely hard to capture each of the band members' personalities to the best of our abilities.
Terry Brown and Alex Lifeson both gave us interviews that added new insights about the album, and at the same time we listened and read every possible article and book that talked about this album. Terry even wrote the foreword! How cool is that?! Geddy and Neil reviewed the book when it was done, and after a few notes we got their thumbs up to move forward.
