After last year's stellar performance during the Time Machine Rour, Rush set the bar quite high for their return to the Bell Centre. Needless to say, the setlist focused primarily on the synth albums of the 80s and Clockwork Angels. Many of the songs dug out of the Rush vault were Territories, The Analog Kid and Grand Designs. During the second half of the show, Rush was accompanied by the Clockwork Angels string section which provided the strings accompaniment for the new album as well as adding a fine touch to Manhattan Project, YYZ and Red Sector A.
Unlike the other two older songs from Rush's career, Red Sector A did not have strings in the original recording. The song was given a rebirth thanks to a few subtly added effects and the fine accompaniment of the Clockwork Angels string section. It was absolutely breathtaking to hear this revitalized song which managed to surpass the quality of its studio counterpart. Another welcome addition was that Rush managed to work around the Bell Centre's rather strict regulations regarding pyrotechnics. Firecrackers went off during Red Sector A as the verse "Shouting guards and smoking guns" was sung, flares flew during Caravan's "A long trail of flares under piercing stars", and sparks came out of the sides of the stage during Headlong Flight.
The night closed off with my favourite song: 2112. I had never thought I would get to experience the grand finale live in concert. As the final repetition of "We have assumed control" echoed through the hallowed halls of the Bell Centre, the concert was forever engraved into my mind, marking the end to a perfect evening with Rush. The following pictures were taken from the very front row of the floor. I hope these pictures manage to instill some of the excitement and happiness that I felt by being there.
