Rush Fans Spread Their Arms and Sing in Atlantic City
Last night, as Rush returned to Atlantic City to close out the first leg of their 2013 Clockwork Angels tour, the band was greeted by a sold-out crowd of fans from across the country. The Mark G. Etess Arena, which resides inside the Taj Mahal casino on the boardwalk of historic Atlantic City, New Jersey isn't a typical venue for the band given its comparatively small capacity of just over 5,000 seats. But inside the arena, the continuous roar of approval from the packed house made the small venue feel like one three times its size.
The 3-hour show was virtually flawless; not a failed guitar feed or broken tom-tom in sight this time around. As the night progressed, the smiles of Geddy, Alex and, yes, even Neil grew wider and wider as they played off each other with their usual humorous banter. And I don't believe I've ever seen Geddy jump - high - as much as he did last night?all without ever missing a beat.
For me, one of the highlights of the show which netted me my first front-row seats
ever didn't even happen during the actual performance. It was at the first intermission as the introduction video 'The Appointment' was playing on the main screen. There, in the shadows, stood Alex Lifeson - not ten feet from where I stood. And what was he doing? He was watching the video - one he's doubtless seen dozens of times - and he was smiling and laughing as if it was his first time witnessing the buffoonery of his band mate's odd-ball sense of humor.
Countless interviews have indicated that the band members are having more fun than ever on this tour. Watching Alex's expression as he viewed this video cemented that notion for me. It's one of those moments I'll not soon forget.
And to make sure I wouldn't forget the rest of the night as I stood perched in front of Alex's side of the 'shop', I snapped off in excess of 500 pictures - 270+ of the best represented below.
Finally, to all the old and new friends I met last night - it was an absolute blast sharing the pre-concert, actual concert and post-concert festivities with you all!
