And the fans descending on Newark...
It was a beautiful fall day in New Jersey. Warm, with a slight breeze that forced down many of the colorful leaves that were clinging with all their might to their host trees. The rainbow-like rainfall of leaves during the day was a perfect precursor to the shower of light, color -- and of course music - that Rush would bring to a sold-out crowd at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ on that fine fall day.
Scores of fans adorned in their Rush t-shirts floated around the streets of Newark that day; many taking in several pre-show gatherings in the local pubs that surround the Prudential Center. Yes, Rush fans ruled the streets on this day, but there was something else lurking about before the show; something no one recognized until it reared its ugly head as the lights went down and the introductory film began.
Gremlins.
It began with the introductory film that played to the capacity crowd - without a hint of sound. "SOUND!" screamed the audience, but it was to no avail. The film began and ended in complete and utter silence, save for the moans from the crowd. But once Rush took the stage and the opening chords of Subdivision echoed throughout the concert hall, the cheers from the crowd were truly deafening.
Gremlins be damned, Rush was on the stage and everyone immediately began to swing and sway, air-drum and air-guitar to the driving music. As the band ended their opening song, a look of disdain crossed over Neil's face. But it wasn't until the first few chords of The Big Money played that the drummer extraordinaire began to really hint that something was amiss.
Gremlins.
Within the first few moments of the second song, out flew Lorne Wheaton, Neil's drum tech, who was bending down in front of Neil's primary bass drum, looking within the monstrous drum kit. To Neil's credit, he didn't miss a beat while Lorne lurked about. As the song came to a close, and Lorne continued to hover about the drum kit, Geddy addressed the crowd, thanking them for coming out -- and apologized as they took a moment out to fix a broken drum head. "Gremlins" Geddy uttered, to a roar of laughter.
Gremlins.
But moments later, a thunderous bass drum test confirmed that the Gremlins were defeated and the band launched into a parade of their early hits; each one thrilling the crowd more than the last. The Gremlins were gone, or so we thought. Later in the first set, as the band began to play their instrumental piece "Where's My Thing?", something immediately sounded, well, off.
Alex's normally driving and melodic guitar chords for the song sound muddled and off key.
Gremlins.
But the band pushed through even though 'Where's My Thing?" didn't quite have the power and depth that it normally did. But most fans either didn't notice or didn't mind and the rain of applause continued when the song drew to a close. Rush then launched into a fantastic rendition of 'Far Cry' to close out the first set. And this time, the Gremlins seemed to exit the arena; their rein of disruption finally over.
As the second set roared to life, so did the addition of the Clockwork Angels String Ensemble. It was a spectacle to behold as the members of the ensemble rocked out to each track on the band's newest album; many bobbing their head furiously up and down as if they were part of the audience and not the performers. The added sounds from the string ensemble beautifully enhanced each song, giving them some depth that the trio alone would not be able to accomplish without triggering some sampled sounds.
Each performed song from Clockwork Angels went off without a hitch, though Headlong Flight was truly the stand-out song. Geddy once again proved that, despite his progressing years, he can still hit some serious high notes with incredible power. Truly amazing - and the crowd reacted accordingly.
The remainder of the concert seemingly flew by as the band exited the Clockwork Angels set for some more classics including a fantastic rendition of Dreamline and the always popular YYZ and The Spirit of Radio.
The encore of Tom Sawyer and 2112 was the perfect way to end the show, though the Gremlins decided to make one last appearance; this time on my camera which flashed the message 'Battery Exhausted' just as 2112 kicked into high gear.
Damn those Gremlins -- but thank you Rush!
