Star Trek Blueprints: Starfleet Transwarp Prototype - Excelsior Heavy Cruiser

Starfleet Cruiser - Sasser Class

Illustrator: Eric Kristiansen
Copyright: 1995

Summary:

GENERAL NOTES:
1. These plans are for the familiarization purposes only and should not be confused with detailed working drawings of the Excelsior Prototype.
2. The Excelsior is the Federation Testbed for the controversial TransWarp Drive. The Transwarp Drive System primarily consists of the standard warp coils and conduits modified with an additional enlarged transporter emitter and pattern buffer assembly. Theroretically, the transporter assembly dublicates the first couple of warp fields and projects them forward of the warp-field sub-space envelope. The infinite attraction between the identical energy particals in the warp fields pulls the ship forward at lower power consumption.
3. In an emergency, the primary hull can separate from the seconaary hull. The secondary hull cannot operate independently.
4. The auxiliary fusion reactors can provide life-support and sublight propulsion in the event of a hull separation. Normally they provide supplementary power.
S. Hydrogen and other interstellar gases are collected and processed for use as fuel in the auxillary power systems and impulse engines.
6. Except when berthed, the craft is crewed at all times. The ship's compliment is divided into four watches of six hours.
7. All decks have built in gravity, inertial dampening and anti-radiation force fields.
B. Environmental suits are fully adjustable and stored in various strategic locations throughout the vessel.
9. The Excelsior class can accept multiple hull violations. All doors and bulkheads are airtight and capable of withstanding sudden drastic pressure changes. The containment doors seal off sections of the ship to prevent progressive decompression. They are kept open during normal operations, but will close when all stations have been secured or when tne hull has been breached. Doors adjacent to evacuated sections can only be overridden by damage control parties. There are similar containment hatches which can seal of all gangways.
10. AUTHORS NOTE: The original Cross Section (located at the rear of the bridge on 1701B) is dramatically incorrect, based on the crafts establised length of 467m a height of 74.93m was calculated. The original cross section shows 36 decks which works out to 2.08m per deck which is just over 6 feet tall (the average ceiling space is 8 feet). 2.08 meters would not leave enough clearance for flooring, conduit, ceiling material and structural support. I have based my design on a more accepted deck height of 2.75m which works out to 9 feet ( 8 feet for the ceiling and a foot for everything else). I have tried to match the location of various components from the original design when sensible. Some items have been moved to more logical locations. The navigational deflector should have been drawn penatrating the additional cowling and the intermix chamber does not line up with the deflection crystals. Also, the original forward torpedo bay would have fired staight into the navigation dome. But as always, feel free to believe the original layout is correct and disregard the new cross section.
