Comments: G'Day from Australia!
I've always been aware of Rush (I grew up in the subdivisions - reference intended - of suburban Toronto). Moreover, my step-grandparents lived next door to Geddy Lee's "cottage" (more like a mansion) in Keswick north of Toronto; my Mom tells me that Geddy's wife sometimes stored her Mercedes in my grandparents' spare garage space. But in 1980 (when I was 13), I was a huge Beatles fan and largely uninterested in anything else. On one occasion, Geddy popped over while we were up visiting for the weekend and my parents asked my sisters and me if we'd like a picture with him. I was so nonplussed I declined (though one of my sisters did take up the offer of a celebrity photo). I always liked the songs I heard on the radio (eg Tom Sawyer, Subdivisions etc), but as we know, some of their best work was not made for that medium. I bought the Chronicles CD in the 90s but it never got a huge amount of play.
I'd been noticing increasing references to Rush in recent times (films like Fanboys, I Love You, Man and their brilliant new documentary). I could never really make out the lyrics to Rush songs, so when I learned about Neil's wordsmithing in "Beyond the Lighted Stage", I listened to the music anew with the lyrics in front of me for the first time. My whole perspective changed - suddenly the music acquired a depth I'd never appreciated before. So while back visiting Toronto in July, my girlfriend and I saw them in concert at the ACC. We were both blown away. She commented "just seeing Neil's drum solo was worth the price of admission". So in a matter of months, I've become a huge "born again" (my secular views aside) Rush fan. In some ways I'm lucky because I'm "discovering" albums like 2112, Farewell to Kings, Fly By Night (to name just a few of my "new" favourites) for the first time. Unlike some people, I really like their 80s "synth" phase too (I love "Hold Your Fire" even if it's not usually cited as a fan favourite).
Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for your informative site - these days I'm keenly looking for new Rush information and material, and you provide a great resource.
Cheers from Down Under
James

Comments: Great site! I just came across it when I Googled "Rush Concert History" and found the date of my first Rush concert, first concert ever actually. April 8th 1979. It seems like yesterday. I was and still am a huge Neil Peart fan. After The Good Rats opened the show on that Sunday night, the lights finally went down, which seemed like an eternity from the Good Rats set and breakdown to the main entree. The roar of the crowd was unbelievable. My eyes were peeled center stage as I was about to see my hero, Neil Peart for the first time. I'm not ashamed to admit that as I type this I have goosebumps. Anyway, it was still dark but there was a lit hallway in back of the stage that surrounded the back section of the arena that threw enough light where I could see the silhouette of Neil's huge double bass drum kit with the percussion frame surrounding it. I could hear Neil going up and down on the toms but couldn't see him because of a black sheet covering his set. When the stage lights came on, a stage hand tore off that black sheet from Neil's drums and there he finally was with his long hair and mustache. I was in heaven. In the 6 or 7 times I have seen Rush since then, it seems that Neil is the center of attention. I don't mean literally, but everybody goes crazy when he throws his stick high in the air and catches it right in tempo. And there are many air drummers in the crowd. I am partial to the older Rush catalog, "A Farewell to Kings" through "Moving Pictures". "Fly By Night" is great too. I have been revisiting those albums recently and listening to them brings me back to those care free days of my youth....Where has the time gone? Great in depth site. It's in my bookmarks now.

I attended the Rush "Time Machine Tour" in Seattle on August 7, 2010. Fantastic show! The guys looked great and have never sounded any better. Despite the cool and damp weather, the show sold out. Huge and very appreciative crowd.
The songs I really enjoyed were "Spirit of Radio", "Red Barchetta", "Time Stand Still", "Subdivisions", and "Tom Sawyer". One surprising standout was "Working Man". This has never been one of my favorite Rush songs, but Geddy Lee did a slow and lyrical, slightly Reggae version of this as their final number.
Many thanks to Rush and the audience members who made this concert the high point of my summer.
